Liverpool rush hour traffic disruption as control centres go down

Major disruption on the roads is expected as rush hour approaches after an IT malfunction hit traffic control centres in the city.

Liverpool Council issued an alert over an "ongoing fault" with two traffic signal communication buildings, in Brownlow Hill and Cherry Lane.

The problem means council staff have lost centralised control over junctions in wards including Central, Fazakerley, Warbreck, West Derby, Tuebrook and Stoneycroft.

A council spokesman said in normal circumstances staff in the communications buildings amend traffic light sequencing as peak time approaches, with cameras capturing where traffic is spiking.

The council confirmed the traffic lights are still operational.

A statement shared on social media stated: "Due to the lack of control we are unable to control individual junctions and coordinate them, this is impacting traffic flow and increasing congestion.

"We are currently investigating the fault and rebooting the servers to maintain communication, there will be periods of disruption when communication is lost, we aim to reduce this downtime where possible.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
