Liverpool reverse furlough decision after public backlash

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have reversed the controversial decision to furlough their non-playing staff.

On Saturday it was announced that around 200 of the club's workers were being placed on the scheme that would see the government pay 80 per cent of their salaries during the coronavirus pandemic.

Liverpool pledged to supplement the additional 20 per cent to ensure no staff member was adversely affected by the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19.

The decision to use the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme put in place by the Conservatives last month was criticised in some quarters, with many feeling the club's use of the system to be exploitative.

Fierce critics included former players Jamie Carragher, Didi Hamann and Danny Murphy, while supporters' union Spirit of Shanly asked the club for an explanation over the move on Saturday evening.

An open letter to Liverpool CEO Peter Moore was also written by SOS chair Joe Blott on Sunday as the influential fans' organisation chased answers over the decision to furlough staff.

However, after gauging the strong public reaction to the move, club owners FSG have now opted to perform a U-turn on their decision.

The ECHO understands Peter Moore was contacted directly by Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson to voice his displeasure over the initial move and no official application had been made before the change of heart.

The news is likely to be welcomed by many who had criticised a club who posted a yearly turnover of £533m and pre-tax profit of over £40m less than six weeks ago.
