Liverpool reveal goalkeeper option and highlight importance of Alisson Becker deputies

Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has revealed Michel Vorm was among the options discussed as the Reds grappled with a crisis between the sticks.

An injury to Alisson Becker earlier this month prompted the Reds to scour the market for an emergency signing with their only other available keepers being the newly-signed Adrian and 20-year-old Caoimhin Kelleher, who had missed much of the summer through injury.

Liverpool ultimately opted to offer a deal to Andy Lonergan, the 35-year-old former Preston North End and Leeds United keeper who had been drafted in to help out on the US tour.

However, it has emerged Vorm, the ex-Holland international without a club since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, had been debated as a possible arrival.

"The signing of Vorm had been discussed," admitted Achterberg, speaking to NOS in Holland.

"A good third goalie at a top club is not a superfluous luxury, I have always said.

"Lonergan has more than 250 matches at Championship level experience, not to be underestimated. And it's not for nothing that Kelleher is Ireland's youth international."

Lonergan was on standby for a debut at Southampton at the weekend after Adrian suffered a freak ankle injury when accidentally caught on the ankle by a supporter during the celebrations following Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea in Istanbul.

The Spaniard recovered sufficiently to take part with Lonergan among the substitutes at St Mary's.
