Liverpool reunited with referee who gave controversial red card and apologised to Cristiano Ronaldo

Liverpool face their final game of the Champions League group stage on Tuesday evening in front of a sold-out San Siro against AC Milan - and they will be reunited with a familiar face.

Danny Makkelie will take charge of proceedings in Milan, and Liverpool will be aware of some controversial decisions the referee has made previously.

The Dutchman sent off Atletico Madrid defender Felipe for a foul on Sadio Mane, which looked only to warrant a yellow but a red was shown, in an incident-packed match at Anfield against Liverpool last month.

While Cristiano Ronaldo previously had problems with Makkelie when playing for Portugal after his last-minute goal against Serbia was ruled out.

The Manchester United star threw his captain’s armband to the floor and left the field of play.

The official later apologised for the mistake.

"As per FIFA's policies, all I can say is that I apologised to the national coach, Mr. Fernando Santos, and to the Portuguese team for what happened," Makkelie said speaking to Portuguese outlet A Bola .
