A restaurant in Liverpool has been criticised for selling an 8oz “ladies fillet” of steak alongside its regular steak offerings.

The £18.95 dish at Manhattan Bar and Grill was spotted by food writer Vicky Andrews, who tweeted a photograph of the menu alongside the caption: “Would you order a ‘ladies fillet’?”

Food critic Jay Rayner also commented on the dish, tweeting: “a fillet for the laydeez [sic]”.

News of the dish prompted a flurry of criticism on Twitter, with many people poking fun at the restaurant’s decision to create a dedicated dish for women.

“Do the other ones come topped with a Yorkie bar or something?” one person joked.

“Ladies’ fillet comes with complimentary sanitary towel,” another teased.

One person described the steak as ”a whole new level of sexism”.

In response to the backlash, Karl Hassan, managing director of the Manhattan Bar and Grill, told The Independent that the “ladies fillet” has been well-received by customers.

“We gave our female customers what they wanted. They wanted a smaller fillet steak: we gave it to them,” he said.

“Liverpool hosts the biggest race meeting in the world – the Grand National," he continued.

"We name the first day of the event Ladies Day. So the Grand National has Ladies Day and Manhattan Bar and Grill has the Ladies Fillet!”
