Liverpool responds to Central Library horror death with heartfelt tributes

Beautiful tributes have been paid to the man who tragically fell to his death in Liverpool Central Library on Wednesday morning.

Social media feeds have seen an outpouring of support since  a man fell from the upper floor in front of staff and visitors. the news to the city .

Tracey Gaines, posting on Facebook said: "So so sad... R.I.P you poor thing..my thoughts go out to his family and friends x."

Another Facebook user Helen Janine Moore, wrote: "Horrible for everybody involved... my daughter was in there studying and they are all very upset."

Another mother, whose daughter was also studying in the library, wrote: "My daughter was there when it happened and is in such a state.

"Poor, poor man."

Police and the coroners office are now trying to get in touch with the relatives of the man, who remains unidentified.

Throughout the day messages continued.

Lynda Halbert wrote: "Heartbreaking news, my thoughts are with all his family and friends. May he rest in peace, god bless."

Others sympathised with witnesses to the fall. Katy Elizabeth Aldridge wrote on social media: "I’d never get over seeing something like this, just awful. R.I.P the poor man."

Another writer, Rory Williams, said: "I hope all the staff and visitors get the support they need, such sad news."

Speaking on behalf of Liverpool City Council, Deputy Mayor Wendy Simon said: “This is clearly a very difficult time for the family and friends of the man who died and all our thoughts are with anyone who knew him and for those who have been affected."

“I would like to thank all of our staff who responded to the incident - they acted immediately and with complete professionalism - evacuating the building and calling the emergency services. They could have done no more."

She added: “A full review will now be carried out in co-operation with all the relevant authorities.”

The man has not yet been formally identified, though police believe he was in his 40s and from the Toxteth area. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Liverpool Central Library is expected to reopen on Friday morning at 9am.
