Liverpool respond to Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain injury concern ahead of Barcelona

Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were notable absentees from Liverpool's training session at Melwood ahead of Tuesday's Champions League semi-final with Barcelona.

However, the Reds played down concerns that the duo could add to Jurgen Klopp's injury headache ahead of the second leg at Anfield.

Both the Dutch defender and the England midfielder took part in a specially tailored lighter session away from the main group.

Van Dijk, who has been ever present in the Premier League, has endured a heavy workload all season, while Liverpool have been cautious with Oxlade-Chamberlain following his recent return to action after a year out due to a serious knee injury.

Klopp can ill afford to lose anyone else as the Reds fine-tune their preparations to face Barcelona.

They must already attempt to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit without 26-goal top scorer Mohamed Salah, who was concussed in Saturday's win at Newcastle .

Roberto Firmino (groin) has also been ruled out, along with Adam Lallana (muscle) and Naby Keita (groin).
