Liverpool resign from European Super League after remarkable FSG U-turn

Liverpool will NOT take part in a breakaway European Super League after Fenway Sports Group bowed to supporter pressure.

The Reds have confirmed they will no longer look to be part of the controversial initiative that had threatened to tear football apart.

A club statement released just before 11pm on Tuesday read: "Liverpool Football Club can confirm that our involvement in proposed plans to form a European Super League has been discontinued.

"In recent days, the club has received representations from various key stakeholders, both internally and externally, and we would like to thank them for their valuable contributions."

Liverpool supporters had reacted with fury at the announcement late on Sunday evening that FSG had decided their club would be one of 12 founding members of the closed-shop league.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp later revealed the players in the coaching staff were not consulted ahead of the news, and reaffirmed his long-known opposition to any sort of Super League.

Liverpool skipper James Milner also came out against the proposals following the Reds' 1-1 draw at Elland Road, where the squad were targeted for abuse by Leeds United fans outside the stadium.

And on Tuesday evening, the Liverpool players announcing on social media their collective opposition to the Super League in a united front on social media.

With supporters across the country from all clubs expressing their outrage, the six English clubs involved - Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur - were threatened with action by UEFA, the Premier League and the UK Government.

Thousands of fans turned up at Stamford Bridge ahead of Chelsea's against Brighton on Tuesday evening, with it emerging shortly before kick-off that the Londoners wanted to withdraw from the Super League.

Shortly afterwards, Manchester City made official their intention to step away - and now FSG have followed suit, joining Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in withdrawing.
