Liverpool release new blackout version of treble winning kit

The online Liverpool FC store is now selling a new 'blackout' version of the famous treble winning kit from the early noughties.

It follows on from the success of other blackout kits with the 2005 Istanbul kit and the retro 'Crown Paints' jersey worn throughout the 80s previously proving popular with supporters.

The all-black shirt is designed with an embroidered LFC crest and raised 'Carlsberg' logo and was made iconic by Gerard Houllier's historic side who won three finals in progressively dramatic circumstances.

The first of the trophies - the 'Worthington Cup' as it was then known - was secured at the back end of February when Liverpool had to rely on penalties to defeat second-tier Birmingham City.

This game was the first domestic cup final to be played at the Millennium Stadium and would prove to be the start of Liverpool's love affair with the Welsh capital.

Less than three months later, Liverpool were back. This time, the opponents were far more formidable and came in the shape of an Arsenal side with the bones of their soon-to-be 'invincibles'.

Despite riding their luck throughout the 90 minutes - oftentimes with the 'helping hand' of defender Stephane Henchoz - the Reds triumphed once again with thanks to two late goals from Michael Owen.

There wasn't much time to deliberate on the dramatic events that took place, however. Just four days later and Liverpool were in yet another final.

This time the setting was the Westfalonstadion, home of Borussia Dortmund. Standing in their way on this occasion was the unlikely sight of small Spanish outfit Deportivo Alaves.

In a unbelievable encounter, plucky Alaves pulled back from 3-1 and then 4-3 down. But deep into the night and nine goals, two red cards and a golden goal later, Liverpool were UEFA Cup and cup treble winners.

The subtle style is likely to go down with the same positive reception as previous editions, so if you want to get your hands on it, you'll most likely have to act fast.

Meanwhile, and elsewhere on Liverpool FC's online store, you can also find a New Balance training gear and kit sale that has been extended throughout July.
