Liverpool relaxed over suggestions Mo Salah could miss up to four months of 2020-21 season

Liverpool remain relaxed over suggestions that Mo Salah could miss up to four months of next season due to international commitments.

Earlier this week, the International Olympic Committee confirmed that this summer’s Tokyo 2020 Games will be pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

No new date has yet been announced, but the IOC did commit to holding the event “no later than summer 2021”.

That decision has opened up the possibility of Salah being called up for two mid-season tournaments by Egypt during the 2020-21 campaign.

The Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to return to a January start date next year - a decision Jurgen Klopp previously described as ‘a catastrophe’.

And that feeling would only be compounded were his talismanic Egyptian forward to be involved in a delayed Olympics shortly after.

However, Standard Sport understands that the matter is not yet considered a cause for concern at Melwood.

Prior to the postponement of the Olympics, Salah had yet to decide whether to make himself available to take up one of three squad spots available to over-23 players.

Had the football schedule not been severely disrupted by coronavirus, the 27-year-old would have missed the start of next season had he chosen to be involved.

And so he planned to make that decision in consultation with Klopp at an appropriate juncture.

Uncertainty over when the competition might take place has only delayed those discussions until clarity over the resumption of sport is found.

As with most other scheduling conflicts created by the coronavirus crisis, Salah’s plans for next season remain up in the air for now.
