Liverpool receive major double injury boost ahead of Manchester United visit to Anfield

Liverpool have been given a double injury boost ahead of Sunday's visit from Manchester United after Fabinho and Joel Matip came through a training session unscathed.

Midfielder Fabinho has been absent since suffering ankle ligament damage in an accidental tangle with Hirving Lozano in the 1-1 draw with Napoli on November 27.

It was an injury that left the £40million midfielder on crutches and in a protective boot as a six-to-eight-week injury layoff was initially forecast at the start of December.

As a result, the Brazil international has missed 13 games as the Reds booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, won the Club World Cup, made it through to the FA Cup fourth round and ran up a 14-point lead at the summit of the Premier League.

After training on his own with some light sessions at Melwood last week, Fabinho was back with his team-mates on Wednesday as the coaching staff put the squad through their paces ahead of the game against United this weekend.

He was joined by Matip who continues his own recovery from a knee injury that has kept him on the shelf for nearly three months.

The central defender hasn't featured since the away game against United back on October 20 but is now in contention for the meeting with Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer's men.

However, given the Reds have kept six successive clean sheets in the Premier League since the 5-2 win over Everton on December 4, any participation for Matip is likely to come on the substitutes' bench.

Manager Jurgen Klopp will deliver an update on the fitness of both Fabinho and Matip in his Friday press conference this week as he continues to see his options bolstered.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain recently come back into the fold for the FA Cup win over Everton after an ankle injury, while Xherdan Shaqiri was a late substitute in the 1-0 victory at Tottenham on Saturday evening.

The recent returns leave Dejan Lovren, James Milner, Naby Keita and Nathaniel Clyne as the remaining four on the sidelines for Klopp.

Meanwhile Pedro Chirivella, Neco Williams, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott all took part in the session at Melwood on Wednesday afternoon.

The quartet were back on Under-23 duty on Monday night as they beat Southampton 5-0 in the Premier League 2 at the Kirkby Academy.
