Liverpool recall defender from loan spell

Liverpool have recalled Rhys Williams from his season-long loan with Swansea City, the Championship club have confirmed.

The 20-year-old, who signed a new long-term contract with the Reds in the summer, has featured just seven times for the Swans since joining the South Wales outfit in the summer.

His last league appearance came against Middlesbrough at the start of December, while he wasn’t even in Russell Martin’s squad for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town ahead of his return to Anfield.

Swansea confirmed his return to Liverpool in a club statement, saying: "Everyone at Swansea City would like to thank Rhys for his contribution during his brief time at the club, and wish him every success in his future career."

The defender made 19 appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side last season, and played a vital role in the final weeks of the campaign to help Liverpool qualify for the Champions League.

Williams' return to Anfield could now see Nat Phillips depart the club permanently, with the centre-back subject of widespread interest and two rejected approaches already this month.

The Reds still expect him to depart before the transfer window closes and have placed a £15m valuation on his head.
