Liverpool reaching important turning point that Manchester United fans will be familiar with

On October 15th 2011, now just over 10 years ago, Manchester United played Liverpool in what was an exciting action-packed fixture which saw fantastic attacking displays from both sides.

Just kidding.

It finished in a 1-1 draw and a draw is a very familiar result for these two sides over the past decade.

But what is very telling for both of these sides is how much has changed between the two teams in the past decade. Liverpool finished on 52 points in eighth place, 37 points behind United and Manchester City.

Both teams were in a much different position to what they are now and if you look at the teams that started that day, you can see why Liverpool were mid-table and also why United began to decline only a few years later.

Now obvious after 10 years it is very unlikely that there will be many players that remain and other than David De Gea, no other player starts for their club and most don't remain there. (however Phil Jones still bafflingly remains at the club).

But the number of key players that made up the squad who were coming towards the end of their career or left United soon after such as Rio Ferdinand, Park Ji-Sung, Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra, was worrying.

Liverpool have made some great signing and upgraded their squad across the board, with signings such as Allison, Virgil Van Dijk, Andrew Roberton, Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane.

What you saw back in 2011 was the beginning of Liverpool's rebuild which started with Luis Suarez and now 10 years on they have won the Premier League and the Champions League, but United have constantly struggled.

United are a few years behind Liverpool but the rebuild is going well so far. Both teams are considerably better than the teams that were fielded that day, but where Liverpool's squad is complete, United is still a few pieces away.

The roles have reversed for now, but Liverpool will be reaching the point that the United squad was at during the 2011/12 season in the near future with Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson, Salah, Mane and Van Dijk all close to 30 years old and Liverpool will have to replace them if they want to maintain success long term.

Football, like many other sports, is full of cycles, and as one giant falls another takes its place. It really is a testament to Sir Alex Ferguson that he was able to maintain success for such a long period, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a tough act to follow.

Looking forward to Sunday, some United fans will be hoping that the club will be able to secure a draw against Liverpool again with opposition in great goalscoring form and United leaking goals left right and centre, a point seems like the best possible result for Solskjaer.

However, with the players that United have at their disposal, United have the ability to secure all three points especially with the Old Trafford crowd behind them and in a few seasons when Liverpool are on the downturn, United need to be ready to capitalise on the weakness of their rivals.
