Liverpool ranked one of the best cities in the world for 2023

Liverpool has been ranked as one of the best cities in the world for 2023.

According to recent rankings released by World's Best Cities, the city has been voted 77 in the world, above the likes of Manchester, Brisbane and Glasgow. The rankings are put together using a combination of six categories including sense of place, connectivity and attractions, culture and nightlife, and prosperity.

London managed to rank first, beating Paris and New York which ranked second and third respectively. The capital was the only UK city to make it into the top 50, with Dublin managing to finish 19th.

Liverpool was noted for its place as an "integral urban centre in world history", with the city documenting it all "masterfully and honestly". Mentioning the importance of the International Slavery Museum and the Western Approaches Museum, the ranking shows how integral the city is to the UK.

The guide said: "Tucked into the northwest coast of England, Liverpool’s place as an integral urban centre in world history is difficult to comprehend without visiting it yourself. Fortunately, Liverpool documents it all masterfully—and honestly.

"The city’s role as a strategic British Empire trade port, responsible for half of Britain’s transatlantic slave trade, is laid bare at its International Slavery Museum. Its contribution to helping win both world wars by sending tens of thousands of Liverpudlians to fight (plus its own strategic location) is outlined in the Western Approaches Museum, housed in a hidden bunker under the city’s streets.

"But it was in its post-war decline that Liverpool made history once more when four local teenagers decided to jam together. Today, The Beatles Story is the world’s largest permanent exhibition purely devoted to telling the band’s tale.

"Almost as revered is Liverpool FC, the UK’s most storied club, and Anfield stadium, their home since 1892. Given these layers of history, the city’s #7 ranking for Sights & Landmarks isn’t surprising. Especially when you explore the kinetic streets of Baltic Triangle and RopeWalks."

Trailing behind Liverpool, Manchester sits in 80th position, with the city being honoured for its "bucking engine of English industry" and the "global curiosity" that is storied in the city.
