Liverpool put under pressure to release Naby Keita as Guinea star declares himself fit for AFCON

Guinea coach Paul Put has admitted his team have put "a lot of pressure" on Liverpool to release Naby Keita for Africa Cup of Nations duty after the Reds midfielder declared himself fit.

The Liverpool star hasn't played since limping off with a groin injury in the first half of the Reds' 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on May 1.

It was initially thought Keita would be ruled out for around two months after hobbling off at Camp Nou but was said to be ahead of schedule towards the end of last month.

Guinea are desperate to have their talisman fit and firing for the tournament in Egypt and the Reds midfielder will be keen to make sure he is ready for their opening game against Madagascar next Saturday.

Head Coach Put has now said that Keita has put himself forward for selection for Sunday's friendly against Egypt, six weeks after the injury against Barca.

And Put said the Guinea Football Federation have been leaning on Anfield officials in an attempt to make sure Keita is dispatched to meet up with his international colleagues.

" Keita leaves [Liverpool] after training in the morning and arrives Monday [evening]," said Put.

"I put a lot of pressure on Liverpool to [send him] as soon as possible.

"In the end, I said that if Naby does not come now, it will be difficult to put [him on] the list for Afcon. He said he will play against Egypt."

The comments come after Guinea Football Federation president Antonio Souare branded Liverpool 's initial diagnosis "hasty and pretentious" last month.

Despite rupturing an adductor muscle, Souare slammed the findings from the Reds' medical staff and told manager Jurgen Klopp to "pull himself together".

Souare was quoted as telling Football Factory Radio: "First we wish a very good and fast healing to Naby, as far as I know the adductors cannot prevent him from playing the African Cup of Nations 2019 that will be played from 22 June for Guinea.

"The adductors [injury] is two to three weeks of unavailability. The Liverpool coach has to pull himself together, let the doctors do their job.

"Naby Keita belongs to a state before belonging to Liverpool. I remind the Liverpool coach a little bit of the rules if he does not know it.

"So it's hasty and pretentious to make statements like this. What we do know is that Naby Keita will play at the African Cup of Nations 2019."

Two Liverpool players who will certainly be involved at AFCON 2019 are Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who begin their campaigns with Egypt and Senegal against Zimbabwe and Tanzania, respectively.
