Liverpool pub which has remained an 'institution' for a century

An iconic Liverpool pub has been a staple in the city for more than 100 years.

The Brookhouse on Smithdown Road near the junction with Greenbank Road is renowned for being a student staple. However, the pub has been a focal point for more than a century.

Back in the 18th century, the original building was nearer to the city centre on Lidderdale Road in Wavertree and was named the Brookhouse due to being opposite the Upper Brook river. It is understood that the brook flows underground at the edge of the car park.

The present building replaced old the Brookhouse pub after it was demolished. It is also understood that the brook flowed to the east of the original building but is now to the west of the present one. The Brookhouse as it is now officially opened in 1878.

It was originally called the Bourne Arms, however people still referred to it as the Brookhouse due to the original building. Throughout the years the pub has become a favourite among students.

The Brookhouse was part of the iconic ' Smithdown Ten' pub crawl which used to be a staple of student life in the city. Sadly many of the other pubs part of the 'Smithdown Ten' are no more, but the Brookhouse remains.

It is hugely popular with students who pile in for pub quizzes, cheap meals and pints in the vast outdoor seating area.
