Liverpool provide Naby Keita injury update after being stretchered off vs Man Utd

Naby Keita's injury is "looking good" after he was carried off on a stretcher in Liverpool's win at Manchester United at the weekend.

The Reds tore their arch rivals apart, winning 5-0 at Old Trafford, but it came at a cost.

Keita was on the receiving end of a nasty Paul Pogba tackle, which earned the United midfielder a red card, and was subsequently taken off on the hour.

The Guinean had scored the game's opening goal and responded well to criticism he received earlier in the week following his display at Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool No 2 Pep Lijnders told the club's website : “Naby has a bruise in this moment, we assess it day by day. It’s looking good, so that’s good."

Jurgen Klopp's side are set to embark on three games within a week, starting with Wednesday night's Carabao Cup clash against Preston.

After that they host Brighton and Atletico which could test their resources.

Midfield is an area where the Reds are having to seek solutions with several players nursing niggles.

Fabinho missed the win in Manchester on Sunday but is in contention to return at the weekend.

Thiago meanwhile, who has been dealing with a calf problem, will not be included for at least another week as he edges closer to training.

Lijnders added: “Fabinho will not be ready for tomorrow’s game, we will assess him day by day still. He can make the game on Saturday hopefully.

“Then we have Thiago as well, who is closer to team training than ever. He will be later in the week with the team training. Probably Brighton comes too early but it’s good that he is back, especially in the situation we are in.”

James Milner is the fourth of Klopp's midfielders to be dealing with an injury woe - and this one will keep him out until after the international break.

The 35-year-old came off on Sunday before the half hour mark having aggravated an issue.

Who is currently the best manager in the world?

“Millie felt something, he felt something wasn’t right in his hamstring, a little bit tight," said Lijnders.

“Then [Mason] Greenwood made this run and he decides, ‘I need to catch him’ – how Millie is, putting the team always first. And that created a bigger injury in that moment, that run."

The squad depth at Liverpool is such that Klopp can still call on the likes of Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Youngster Kaide Gordon is set to miss the trip to Deepdale.
