Liverpool prove why Graeme Souness has got it so wrong about Tottenham in the Champions League

Graeme Souness labelled Spurs "lucky" to be in the Champions League final.

You could argue that, given Manchester City had an injury-time goal ruled out by VAR in the quarter-finals and Lucas Moura scored in the 96th minute to beat Ajax in the semi-finals.

But the Liverpool legend's claim really stems from the number of games Tottenham have lost this season.

Spurs had an extraordinary run in the Premier League, finishing fourth despite losing a whopping 13 games.

That is because they only drew twice, winning 23.

Speaking to Balls.ie he said: "Spurs shouldn't be there. You say to anyone at the start of the season, this team is going to lose 19 games in all competitions and yet they'll find themselves in the final of the Champions League, you’d say they’re talking nonsense."

Spurs lost two Champions League group games, the second leg against City and the first leg against Ajax, as well as an FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace and a League Cup semi-final second leg loss to Chelsea.

And yet they are in the Champions League final with 19 defeats to their name.

It would be astonishing, if it had not happened before - to Liverpool.

Souness claimed it was "nonsense" for a team to reach the final having lost 19 games in their season, however, that is exactly what Liverpool did on their way to winning the 2005 Champions League.

The Reds endured a difficult Premier League campaign, finishing fifth having lost 14 times.

Burnley knocked them out of the FA Cup in the third round, while they were beaten in the final of the League Cup by Chelsea.

And while they lost two group games in the Champions League on their way to the final and that extraordinary comeback of all comebacks to defeat AC Milan in the final, they also had to qualify to get into the groups, beating Austrian side Grazer AK 2-1 on aggregate, losing the second leg 1-0.

That amounts to 19 defeats in one season. So, not nonsense after all.
