Liverpool bosses had always anticipated a decline in results under Jurgen Klopp as they planned for life after his departure.
The German has overseen a poor defence of Liverpool's title this season as they face the prospect of missing out on the Champions League.
But upon signing his new deal last season, which takes him through until 2024, FSG outlined plans for rebuilding their squad which accounted for them falling down the league - although this has happened quicker than was anticipated.
That was providing Klopp remained focused on the long-term project and sought to prepare the team for a second wave of success.
The Reds have been dealt a tough hand this season with a host of defensive injuries hampering their ambitions.

But their misfiring attack has also come in for harsh criticism having scored just once in six successive Anfield defeats.
It has led to suggestions that an overhaul is needed and FSG were aware of this.
Liverpool have had a very settled team for much of the past three seasons and there is an acceptance that there will need to be changes, reports the Athletic.
The likes of Curtis Jones and Neco Williams have broken into the first team over the past 18 months and continue to be on the fringes.
While established star Georginio Wijnaldum is into the final few months of his deal and could move on.

Centre-forward Roberto Firmino has also been linked with an Anfield departure as the Reds look to freshen up their attack.
The early exit of Germany boss Joachim Low, who will step down this summer, has led to suggestions that the country's football chiefs will make a move for Klopp.
But the German has been quick to address speculation and ruled himself out of the running.
"I will not be available as a potential coach for the German team," he said.
"I have three years left at Liverpool don't I? It's simple.
"You sign a contract and you stick to that contract. I stuck to contracts at Mainz and Dortmund."
