Liverpool Premier League title hopes boosted by Serie A plan

Liverpool's hopes of playing out the remainder of their Premier League campaign have been handed a boost after Serie A teams agreed their season should be completed.

The Premier League has been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak, but clubs are committed to resuming the season once it is safe to do so.

Liverpool are currently 25 points clear at the top of the table and need just two wins from their remaining nine games to be crowned Premier League champions for the first time in their history.

Leagues across Europe are all in a similar position to the Premier League, with plenty of proposals on how to complete them being mooted by various clubs, associations and executives.

But now Italy has moved to confirm that all 20 Serie A teams have unanimously agreed they should try and complete the 2019-20 season.

Clubs in the division had initially been divided on what steps to take moving forward, with Sampdoria and Torino against playing on, while Brescia claimed they would forfeit matches rather than take to the field to finish the season.

"The Serie A general assembly met this morning and confirmed, with a unanimous vote of all 20 clubs connected by video conference, the intention to complete the 2019-2020 football season, if the government allows it to take place," Serie A said in a statement.

The move comes just hours after UEFA confirmed, and in a blow to Liverpool titles hopes, that they will produce guidelines for countries that want to end their seasons early.

UEFA did, however, also stand by their earlier recommendation for domestic seasons to be completed, something that the majority of Premier League clubs are united in doing, it was confirmed on Friday.

But the Premier League are yet to outline their proposals on how to finish the season, with their next meeting scheduled to take place a week on Friday.
