Liverpool Premier League title challenge 'small thing' as former Everton defender sends warning

Former Everton defender Slaven Bilic has called Liverpool's title challenge a "small thing" compared to the "disaster" of the season being ended prematurely.

Elite football in England has been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak, with the Premier League and EFL having committed to resuming their campaigns once it is safe to do so.

However, the ongoing uncertainty has prompted calls from several high-profile personalities to scrap the season.

Liverpool are 25 points clear at the summit in the top-flight while Everton stand six points off a European qualification berth.

And ex-Blues centre-back Bilic, who is currently boss of Championship promotion hopefuls West Bromwich Albion, believes games being played behind closed doors - as is most likely should the season be resumed - is preferable to the possibility of clubs going out of business.

“For me, I think it’s better to do it that way than not to play at all – that’d be a disaster," he said.

"I’m not talking about a disaster for who finishes first or second – I’m talking about some clubs who will be in big problems that would be impossible to recover from.

“It’s not about who’s going to get promoted, or are Liverpool going to win the league? They’re small things.

"The bigger thing is for the sake of football clubs. Some clubs are struggling and they need to function.”

Bilic added: “I played in a few games behind closed doors in ex-Yugoslavia and also Turkey because there were a few problems with fans.

“It’s different. It’s not nice. Crowds are essential, without them it’s a totally different feeling. It’s nowhere near the same atmosphere.

“Nobody is saying it’s better to play without crowds, but unfortunately it’s the only way, or it may be the only way for us to finish the season.”
