How Liverpool should line up against Porto - Joe Gomez returns but Naby Keita rested

'It's time for the tried and trusted'

Ian Doyle:  Come on everybody, this is a Champions League quarter-final!

And this is a big deal.

Jurgen Klopp knows it, and there's no suggestion, no indication of him taking things easy with his team selection for the second leg in Porto, despite Liverpool's 2-0 aggregate lead.

James Milner reveals who he is backing in Liverpool wager and why Jordan Henderson could be involved

Klopp's hand has been forced a little bit with the absence of Dejan Lovren.

That means Joel Matip stays alongside Virgil van Dijk at centre-back while Andy Robertson is at left-back having missed the first leg through suspension.

I was tempted to put in James Milner at right-back, but Trent Alexander-Arnold stays in.

So do the front three. What about the midfield, then?

It's time for the tried and trusted.

In, then, comes Gini Wijnaldum and Milner to join skipper Jordan Henderson.

My team (4-3-3) : Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Wijnaldum, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

'Liverpool must opt for solidity'

Connor Dunn: I firmly believe that Liverpool will score at the Estadio do Dragao on Wednesday night and that would mean Porto need to find four in return to progress into the next round.

With that in mind it feels like there is no need to select an all out attacking line up but instead opt for solidity and that for me comes from a midfield three of Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

With Dejan Lovren unavailable the centre-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip stays and left-back Andy Robertson also retains his place.

On the other side of the defence though Trent Alexander-Arnold deserves a rest with James Milner coming in to fill that position.

Leading the line are the ever-present front three and at the other end it is, of course, Alisson Becker.

My team (4-3-3) : Alisson; Milner, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

'Trent has earned a rest'

Theo Squires:  Despite boasting a 2-0 aggregate lead, and with memories of last year’s 5-0 victory in Portugal fresh in the mind, Liverpool can’t take Porto for granted on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will expect to set up a semi-final clash with Barcelona, make no mistake, but it won’t be easy. Porto beat Roma 3-1 at home in the last round afterall.

James Milner on what has impressed him most about Liverpool this season

With that in mind, I’m going for a slightly conservative line-up for this one. Much as the first leg was a case of get it done early and sit it out, Liverpool will want this to go the same.

I’d throw Joe Gomez in from the start at right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold earning a rest. Porto did get in behind the Reds defence numerous times at Anfield so a more defensive back-line wouldn’t hurt.

With Dejan Lovren ill, the rest of the defence picks itself with Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson lining up in front of Alisson.

The front three are in the best form they’ve been in all season so why rock the boat? They keep their places.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita have been superb in recent outings but they drop to the bench with Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner taking their places.

Virgil van Dijk explains why it's a 'great time to be a Liverpool player' as he eyes dream double

I’d be tempted to rest Fabinho, but with Henderson playing so well in that more advanced role, I wouldn’t want to rock his rhythm by putting him back in the holding role.

Again, a more cautious approach won’t hurt and Klopp will need all members of his squad firing on all cylinders for this decisive month of the season.

My team (4-3-3) : Alisson; Gomez, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

'Liverpool must go all out for an away goal'

Caoimhe O'Neill: Liverpool are on the cusp of reaching a Champions League semi-final and despite a comfortable 2-0 lead the Reds must go all out for the away goal.

The back-line including goalkeeper remains unchanged.

James Milner's honest response when asked if Liverpool are best team in world

Jurgen Klopp has said Joe Gomez might feature at some point and I think his return will be a welcomed one, but most likely as a second-half substitute to help manage the game.

For me Naby Keita retains his starting place in the midfield.

The Guinean looks to be growing in confidence with every match and increased playing time will only add to that.

It feels impossible to leave Gini Wijnaldum out but the captain Jordan Henderson has been unplayable of late and he slots in beside the reliable Fabinho.

Hopefully the front three can get off to a thrilling start and we can replace them as early as possible, with one eye on the weekend's clash with Cardiff.

My team (4-3-3) : Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Keita, Fabinho, Mane, Salah, Firmino
