How Liverpool should line up vs Southampton - Divock Origi starts as Gini Wijnaldum benched

Sean Bradbury - 'Divock Origi has earned a start'

It seems there are no concerns around Virgil van Dijk's fitness, so he starts with Joel Matip keeping his place beside him.

Alisson is in goal with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson on the flanks as usual.

I'd mix it up a bit for this one and return to a 4-2-3-1 formation.

It worked very well away to Wolves who have a reasonably similar setup to Southampton, with the wing-back system seen for much of Ralph Hasenhüttl's reign so far.

In the centre of midfield Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are both there to provide protection.

Gini Wijnaldum, whose level has dipped in recent weeks, gets a well-deserved rest. Roberto Firmino drops deeper to an advanced midfield position.

Divock Origi has earned a start and plays on the left of the front line, with Sadio Mane in the middle where he did serious damage against Watford at Anfield - and Mohamed Salah on the right.

My team (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson; Salah, Firmino, Origi; Mane.

Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool's Friday night clash at Southampton

Ian Doyle - 'Gini Wijnaldum rested'

They're all must-win at this point of the season, and this is one where horses will very much be for courses.

Tempting as it is to switch to a 4-2-3-1, I'd stick with 4-3-3 and see how things go in the first half.

Liverpool will no doubt be the team on the front foot, though, so I'd want a much more progressive midfield.

Why Jurgen Klopp believes Van Dijk and the whole defence see their futures at Liverpool

Naby Keita can come in - narrowly getting the nod ahead of Adam Lallana - so too Fabinho. Jordan Henderson remains, with James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum rested, the latter much-needed.

The rest of the team picks itself.

My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Keita, Fabinho, Henderson; Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Southampton vs Liverpool: Last five games at St. Mary's

Paul Gorst - 'I'm going to recall Naby Keita'

A Friday night trip to Southampton represents another tricky test for Jurgen Klopp and his title-chasing Liverpool.

And with a big Champions League clash with Porto next week on the horizon, will the Reds boss be tempted to rotate somewhat?

For me, I'm sticking to the back five that have performed so well these past few months.

Alisson starts behind Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson.

The midfield is a three-man system - I rarely use the 4-2-3-1 - so I'm going to recall Fabinho alongside Gini Wijnaldum and Naby Keita.

In the words of Liam Gallagher, it's as you were for the front three.

My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Keita, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Caoimhe O'Neill - 'Fabinho regains his place'

I don't think Jurgen Klopp will want to mess with the solidity Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk's partnership has guaranteed.

Against Spurs we saw Klopp roll out his tried and trusted midfield trio of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum.

Their dependability has been at times awesome but on Sunday it looked less impressive. Therefore Fabinho regains his place in the middle of the park to add attacking dynamism and defensive assurance.

I think Henderson and Wijnaldum will play alongside the Brazilian, with Milner rested ahead of his likely return to left-back on Tuesday - due to Andy Robertson's Champions League suspension.

Divock Origi is the only player to challenge for a starting place up front and the Belgian will definitely pick up some minutes.

But they will be from off the bench with Klopp unlikely to leave out any one of his magnificent three.

My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Henderson; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
