Liverpool post message of support for Sean Cox one year on from Anfield attack

Liverpool wrote a message of support for Sean Cox on the first anniversary of the attack outside Anfield that left him with life-changing injuries.

The Meath man was viciously attacked outside the stadium ahead of the Champions League clash with Roma last April.

Cox is continuing his rehabilitation and recovery while his Italian attacker has since been jailed.

And Liverpool said in a statement today: "On April 24, 2018, Seán Cox travelled from his home in Ireland to watch his beloved Reds at Anfield.

"That night, Sean suffered life-changing injuries when he was the victim of an unprovoked attack outside the stadium ahead of the Champions League semi-final against Roma.

"The club, fans, and his local community all have come together over the last 12 months in support of Seán and his family, raising vital funds for his care and sending messages of love and encouragement in his recovery."

It adds: "Twelve months on, our hearts and prayers are with Sean and his family as he continues his rehabilitation journey."

The message was accompanied with a picture of Liverpool players Georginio Wijnaldum and Andy Robertson holding a flag that reads "Sean Cox - you'll never walk alone" from a friendly match between the Reds and Napoli at the Aviva Stadium last August.

There has been huge support from across the sporting world for Cox since the horrific event one year ago.

A Go Fund Me page set up for the Dunboyne man has raised over €1 million with Roma football club donating €100,000, Dunnes Stores also giving €100,000 and a Meath v Dublin GAA game raising €90,000.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Everton defender Seamus Coleman and Ireland midfielder David Meyler have also made personal donations of €5,000.

Cox made his first public outing since the Anfield attack earlier this month at a charity match in his honour at the Aviva.

The dad of three smiled alongside his wife Martina and children Jack, Shauna and Emma.

Liverpool's statement in full

On April 24, 2018, Seán Cox travelled from his home in Ireland to watch his beloved Reds at Anfield.

That night, Sean suffered life-changing injuries when he was the victim of an unprovoked attack outside the stadium ahead of the Champions League semi-final against Roma.

The club, fans, and his local community all have come together over the last 12 months in support of Seán and his family, raising vital funds for his care and sending messages of love and encouragement in his recovery.

Earlier this month, the club hosted a special charity game at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, which saw LFC Legends and a Republic of Ireland XI come together in aid of the Seán Cox Rehabilitation Trust. Thousands of fans turned out to support Seán and watch the Reds come from behind to beat a Republic of Ireland XI 2-1.

Back in October, during the LFC’s Premier League fixture against Cardiff City, the club and fans also joined forces to show their support for Seán. Volunteers from Liverpool FC and Spirit of Shankly staged a bucket collection at Anfield, which was match-funded by LFC Foundation. The club and its players are also supporting the appeal privately.

Twelve months on, our hearts and prayers are with Seán and his family as he continues his rehabilitation journey.
