Liverpool poised to agree centre-back exit despite injury crisis

Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal allowing young defender Sepp van den Berg to depart on loan this month.

The Premier League champions have received interest from three clubs in the 19-year-old centre-back, who signed for the Reds in a £1.3million deal from PEC Zwolle in the summer of 2019.

Liverpool are happy for Van den Berg to leave in pursuit of regular senior football despite an injury crisis at centre-back that has seen Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips promoted from the Academy and 17-year-old Billy Koumetio make his senior debut.

While Van den Berg has four appearances for the Liverpool first team, he has made only one matchday squad this season as an unused substitute in the Carabao Cup win at Lincoln City in September.

The teenager has instead been involved with the under-23s while also making two outings in the EFL Trophy.

Clubs from the Belgian and Swiss top flights and the German second division have held talks with Liverpool over taking Van den Berg on loan until the end of the season, with a temporary exit expected to be confirmed this week.

Earlier this month, Championship side Blackburn Rovers - where Harvey Elliott has impressed on loan this term - also expressed an interest in the former Holland under-19 international.
