Liverpool players show solidarity with George Floyd protesters by taking the knee at Anfield

Liverpool have released a photograph of their first-team squad taking the knee in a show of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Taken at their request, the photo was shared across social media by the players with the caption: “Unity is strength #BlackLivesMatter”.

The Reds’ backing of the movement comes after a sixth day of protests in the United States over the death of American citizen George Floyd.

Unrest began after a video was released showing Mr Floyd falling unconscious as a white police officer kneeled on his neck while arresting him in Minneapolis.

The officer in question, Derek Chauvin, has since been fired from the police force, and has been charged with murder and manslaughter.

Several major organisations across the US, including sports franchises, have since shown their support for the protests.

And now Jurgen Klopp and his squad have shown solidarity with those fighting for racial inequality to be addressed.

Liverpool’s visit to Anfield today is their first since defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on March 11.

The Reds conducted a training session at their home ground as they continue preparations for the return of Premier League football later this month.
