Liverpool players given training session with a difference in effort to combat stress this season

Liverpool's players were given a motivational speech from world-class surfer Sebastian Steudtner during last week's training camp in Evian.

Steudtner visited the Reds squad during

and took part in a session with the players in a swimming pool that focused on breathing techniques and coping under stress.

The move was designed to help Jurgen Klopp's players combat the onset of tension and pressure when the new season gets underway later this week.

The German, who is said to be regarded as one of the planet's finest big-wave surfers, spoke to the Liverpool team ahead of the new Premier League season, which kicks off on Friday night when the Reds host Norwich at Anfield.

The ECHO understands Liverpool's players were impressed by what they heard from Steudtner, whose motivational speech was aimed at helping the European Cup winners combat stress and panic ahead of the new campaign.

Rather than a standard session on the training pitch, Klopp's charges took a dip into the pool as Steudtner put them through their paces.

It's the latest in a series of marginal gains Klopp has employed across the course of his Liverpool career to help his players in their pursuit of success.

The Reds manager leaves no stone unturned in his efforts to win silverware at Anfield and the talk from Steudtner is believed to have been well received by last year's Premier League runners-up.

Steudtner, whose exploits have seen him become a brand ambassador for Mercedes Benz, won the XXL Biggest Wave Award in 2015 when he scaled a 71-foot wave off the coast of Portugal.

Earlier this year, the 34-year-old claimed to have surfed an even bigger wave at the same location at Nazare, Leiria and his talk and subsequent session with the Reds squad were said to have been productive.

Liverpool signed off from a morale-boosting week in Evian with a convincing display against Lyon in Geneva last week.

The Reds beat the Ligue 1 side 3-1 at Stade de Geneve in what was arguably their most impressive performance of the pre-season schedule.

Sunday's 1-1 draw with Manchester City saw the Reds beaten on penalties at Wembley, but Klopp was heartened by what he saw from his title-chasing side, particularly in the second half.

"I thought they looked pretty hungry," Klopp said after the game.

"That doesn’t mean it will work out but we fought today after all the things that were said about the competition, both teams wanted to win it desperately, I saw that.

“My team is not in doubt about being satisfied or whatever, to stop working or stop running. The character of the team is still incredibly good."
