The Reds took the lead through Roberto Firmino in the first half when he connected from Andy Robertson's superbly whipped crossed.
But Spurs came out fighting after the break, and levelled through Lucas Moura after some quick thinking from Harry Kane.
Virgil van Dijk did brilliantly to defend a two-on-one break as Moussa Sissoko blazed a great chance over the bar.

And then as stoppage time approached, a Mohamed Salah header forced Hugo Lloris into an error and led to a Toby Alderweireld own goal.
Anfield erupted and Jurgen Klopp's side are now back on top of the table. Here is how Ian Doyle rated the players yesterday...
Alisson Becker 6
Let one early claim slip out his grasp and lucky to escape after a miscommunication with Milner. Rarely looked composed, but slightly better second half.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 8
A few excellent defensive moments settled Liverpool nerves and was able to roam down the right. Hit the post with a corner and dragged a shot wide, and his cross from the left created the winner.
Joel Matip 7
Sometimes a little uneasy under the high ball and given a real test by Moura. Solid enough defensively.

Virgil van Dijk 9
Kane was given absolutely nothing by the big Dutchman, who made it look a lot easier than it actually was. Missed a chance late on, but his number on Sissoko turned the match.
Andy Robertson 8
Made the most of the space Tottenham's formation afforded him first half and put in a brilliant cross for the opener. Blocked a certain goal for Eriksen after the break.
Jordan Henderson 6
While playing a part in the opener, the skipper was guilty of some slack passing and conceded the daft free-kick from which Tottenham equalised. Substituted.
Gini Wijnaldum 6
As ever, got through plenty of work but most of it went under the radar. Became the base of a 4-2-3-1 during the final quarter.
James Milner 7
Thundered into a number of challenges and was always looking to get Liverpool moving forward before tiring a bit. Substituted.
Mohamed Salah 7
Close to an opening on several occasions first half without threatening. Could have passed to Mane when wasting a chance after break, but potential was not matched until his header forced the blunder from Lloris for the winner.
Roberto Firmino 7
Ghosted in between two defenders to thump home an excellent header for the first and did well to ensure he kept all those Tottenham defenders occupied. Some nifty passing, too.
Sadio Mane 7
Inches away from a goal with a curling shot and one press on Eriksen had the crowd on their feet. Kept plugging away and was Liverpool's most dangerous forward once more.
Fabinho (for Milner 77)
Made a big difference by adding some control to midfield and allowing Liverpool to regain the initiative.
Divock Origi (for Henderson 77)
His forceful running down the left earned a succession of corners from which the winner eventually arrived.
Dejan Lovren (for Salah 90+4)
Got to shake hands with his mate.
