Calmed any nerves with an early take and composed first half. Caused panic with one wander after the break, but made a huge claim for a cross in injury time.

Already establishing himself as a crowd favourite, worked hard down the right and flashed one shot wide after a forceful run. Close again second half and excellent long ball led to the own goal opener. Booked.

Got away with an unwise attempt early on to dribble out of the area, otherwise solid and sensible.
Sepp van den Berg 8
Good defensive header early on set the tone for a very confident first-half display. Sniffed out danger regularly and rarely beaten in the air.
Adam Lewis 7
A senior debut on his first start at any level for three months after a knee injury, at times understandably rusty but always willing to press forward and improved as game progressed.
Pedro Chirivella 9
Prowled around the defensive midfield area with intent and mopped up well on more than one occasion, using the ball economically. His experience – well, relative to those around him – was crucial in the closing stages.

Leighton Clarkson 8
Not all his ambitious passing came off but always looked to go forward and not afraid to make a tackle. One superb ball helped fashion a chance for Williams.
Jake Cain 7
Prominent in the early stages but life became a little more difficult towards the break for the debutant. Kept on going second half and his close control and persistence got him out of so many tight spaces.
Harvey Elliott 8
Much more lively than in the first game, his direct runs and skills frightened Shrewsbury and helped make space for Williams. His presence forced Williams – the Shrewsbury one – to head in the winner.
Liam Millar 6
Tough ask as a diminutive central striker up against the powerful and tall Shrewsbury defenders. Better when shifted occasionally to the left and put in one great cross. Subbed.
Curtis Jones 8
Started on the left but given something of a free role and made the most of it, testing O’Leary with a free-kick and taking one in the face from a defender’s fist. Bit greedy at times but he’s good and he knows it.

Another debutant, would have been in for a clear run on goal but for an overhit Elliott pass.
