Liverpool player ratings vs Salzburg in Champions League thriller as Virgil van Dijk endures rare struggle

Adrian 6

Decent stop from Minamino at his near post. No chance with any of the goals but got away with one when Daka charged down a clearance.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

Put one good ball in for Firmino before another invited Robertson to score. Defensively sound even if he could have done with a bit more help from Salah.

Joe Gomez 5

Deputising for Matip, was given a very tough time by Hwang, Daka and later Haaland. Distribution not always on point either.

Virgil van Dijk 5

The opposition were keen to keep the play away from him early on. But after being fooled by Hwang for Salzburg's first, was not great for their third. A rare iffy night for the Dutchman.

Andy Robertson 8

Played a part in the opener and then initiated and finished a brilliant team move for the second. His defending impressed first half, but was too slack in the period after the interval. Improved again late on.

Fabinho 7

Plugged the gaps in midfield during the opening exchanges and provided tempo, but was pulled out position second half until the switch to 4-2-3-1. Booked.

Jordan Henderson 6

Put in a solid shift before the break but, like Liverpool, lost his way badly after that. Seemed tired and was replaced.

Gini Wijnaldum 6

Allowed to show a more creative edge to his game, like Henderson was leggy after 45 minutes. Also subbed.

Mohamed Salah 7

Another night of nearly things for the Egyptian until his first goal, even if it wasn't the most convincing finish. Not at his best but still took the fourth very well.

Roberto Firmino 7

Almost converted early on and played a delicious pass for Mane's opener while his header prompted the third. Some lovely flicks from the birthday boy, not least the one that created the fourth.

Sadio Mane 8

Brilliant run and deliberate finish for the first Liverpool goal. Had the beating of Salzburg right-back Kristensen. Should have scored second half, however.

James Milner (for Henderson 62) 7

Successfully helped bring some control to the midfield alongside Fabinho.

Divock Origi (for Wijnaldum 64) 6

Not the same impact as at Bramall Lane.

Naby Keita (for Salah 90)

Said hi against his former club.
