Liverpool player ratings as Trent Alexander-Arnold and two others superb at Aston Villa

Alisson Becker 7

Saved from Watkins and Luiz in build-up to Villa opener but lucky to escape when hitting a pass straight at the former. Two big saves from Ings second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 8

Caused a few problems for Villa with his deliveries early on before grasping the initiative after the break with a hugely impressive display, particularly going forward.

Joel Matip 7

On hand to force home the equaliser and the only Liverpool defender to retain composure during wayward opening, and retained level throughout.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Shot prompted the equaliser and gradually won his battle up against Watkins, even if he didn’t always have his own way before interval.

YOUR SHOUT: Rate the Liverpool players for vital 2-1 victory at Aston Villa

Kostas Tsimikas 6

All over the place in the opening exchanges but did put a decent cross in for Mane header. Improved second half and one vital challenge denied Watkins.

Fabinho 4

Took an early knock, was subsequently bypassed regularly, got away with a few fouls and then went off with an apparent hamstring injury.

Naby Keita 7

Didn’t offer much protection defensively early doors but looked to probe Villa. Bad miss when miskicking from eight yards, but constantly looked to move Liverpool forward second half.

Curtis Jones 6

Barely involved amid all the mayhem early on but, like his colleagues, began to find some spaces in which to work after the half-hour mark. Subbed.

Luis Diaz 7

Took a few whacks but kept plugging away and was rewarded with a good assist for the second. Always a threat. Subbed.

Sadio Mane 8

Leapt well with one header midway through first half before clever nod put Liverpool ahead. Put in a tremendous amount of work.

Diogo Jota 7

Fair amount of endeavour first half but began to show a lot more quality after break and excellent pass in build-up to second goal.

Jordan Henderson (for Fabinho 30) 8

Brought a bit of much-needed bite to the midfield with some strong challenges and offered greater protection to the defence.

Thiago Alcantara (for Jones 62) 7

Won ball to initiate move for Liverpool’s second and passing brought composure.

Mohamed Salah (for Diaz 72) 6

Almost scored with first touch but wasn’t able to overly impact proceedings.
