Liverpool player ratings as Thiago and Fabinho good despite draw against Newcastle

Alisson Becker 7

Almost sold Milner short with one hazardous first-half pass. Solid handling from a number of Newcastle shots from range and one good stop from Clark.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 5

Defended inconsistently during a testing opening period and deliveries were strangely poor, although second half slightly better.

Nat Phillips 6

Lack of pace exposed by Wilson on one occasion but so strong in the air. Steady if not spectacular. Booked.

Fabinho 7

Excellent block denied Wilson the opener and held the Liverpool defence together during a rocky start. Booked.

Andy Robertson 7

Took a heavy knock early on and began to stretch his legs going forward in the second half as the visitors began to impose themselves.

Jordan Henderson 6

Not at his best but got through a lot of running and put Salah away for first-half chance. Appeared a little tired.

James Milner 7

Busy outing on return to first team and, after some early signs of rustiness, warmed to task with some impressive defensive work. Booked.

Curtis Jones 5

Employed in an advanced midfield role but contribution minimal first half. Refused to be dissuaded and slightly improved after break. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 5

Barely involved in opening half-hour and then missed clear chance. Slipped another wide second half. Not his night. Subbed.

Roberto Firmino 7

Some joy when dropping off the Newcastle back five and had two headers brilliantly saved by Darlow, but should have done better with another free one after keeper flap.

Sadio Mane 5

Wasted a number of opportunities to burst into space before break but good cross for Firmino chance. Too often on the periphery second half and denied by Schar clearance off line.

Gini Wijnaldum (for Jones 68) 6

Brought energy but couldn’t quite find the killer ball.

Thiago Alcantara (for Milner 73) 7

Some fine passes on his welcome return to action.

Xherdan Shaqiri (for Salah 90+2)

Asking a lot for him to win it.
