Liverpool player ratings as Nathaniel Phillips shines before Jota and Shaqiri make an impact

Alisson Becker 6

Will probably think he could have done better with the West Ham opener. Otherwise rarely involved.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

Crosses caused a problem for the Hammers and regularly augmented the attack. Stood strong defensively when the visitors pressed.

Joe Gomez 7

Responded well to the misdirected header that gifted the visitors the lead and read the game impressively.

Nat Phillips 8

Settled with an early towering header and kept things simple on the floor while dominating in the air. Very encouraging performance on Premier League debut.

Andy Robertson 8

Not much chance to overlap down the left in early stages but diligent in his work at both ends and good tackle inside area prevented Hammers chance. Good block from Forlan second half.

Jordan Henderson 7

Strong during the opening quarter and continued to look to set the tempo. Always on the front foot and proved sound defensive cover throughout.

Gini Wijnaldum 7

Got through a lot of work as always but wasn’t able to influence matters going forward first half. Improved after the break and became a greater threat in attack.

Curtis Jones 6

Eager to take on possession, rarely unruffled but not easy finding holes in the well-organised Hammers rearguard. Better after break. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 7

Easily the most dangerous Liverpool forward first half. Had measure of Cresswell early on and won and scored the penalty to equalise, and continued to threaten. Subbed.

Roberto Firmino 5

Touch reasonable for the most part but rarely in any threatening areas first half. Faded badly after the break. Subbed.

Sadio Mane 7

Took an age to get up to speed but began to test the Hammers defence with his direct running towards break, and persistently troubled the visitors second half.

Xherdan Shaqiri (for Jones 70) 8

Brought incision to Liverpool’s midfield and supreme pass released Jota for the second.

Diogo Jota (for Firmino 70) 8

Instantly made an impact once again with one disallowed goal before taking his winner superbly.

James Milner (for Salah 90)
