Liverpool player ratings as Mohamed Salah fires lacklustre Liverpool to Watford win

Liverpool maintained their stunning start to the season - despite limping past bottom of the table Watford at Anfield.

The Reds were far from at their best in the early kick-off, but Mohamed Salah's curling effort late in the first half ultimately made the difference before he killed off the game with a cheeky backheeled finish late on.

The Egyptian was the source of most of Liverpool's threat, along with Sadio Mane on the opposite flank, as a lack of fast supply from midfield limited their ability to break down the struggling Hornets.

But they never really looked in danger of failing to win the game as they moved 11 points clear of Leicester at the top of the table before their clash with Norwich this afternoon.

Here's how Jurgen Klopp's men rated at Anfield.

Alisson 7

Doucoure and Sarr both should have at least tested him in the first half but both miss-kicked. As solid and composed as ever, especially to block out Deulofeu and Sarr.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6

Sarr and Deulofeu both streamed past him on a couple of occasions. Unmemorable.

Joe Gomez 8

Astute defensively - particularly a one-vs-one masterclass. Always gets the timing of his tackles perfect. Never rushed when passing out from the back either.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren injured, no problem for van Dijk. No disrespect to Gomez (who was the better of the two centre backs), but you could partner the Dutchman with a piece of quiche and the pastry crust filled with savoury custard would look at least steady.

James Milner 6

New contract but standard Milner performance. No alarms and no surprises. Maybe could criticise him for ending up too central at times.

Jordan Henderson 5

Passing seemed less than metronomic before he was booked for a clumsy first half foul. Wayward shooting found the crowd more often than testing Foster.

Gini Wijnaldum 5

Sat too deep to affect the game properly. When he did appear he didn't cover himself in glory. Injured before the hour mark and was replaced by Robertson.

Xherdan Shaqiri 6

Should have got an assist for Mane's VAR non-goal. Keeps the ball moving well and protected Alexander-Arnold.

Roberto Firmino 6

His roulette in the first half was a thing of beauty - even if it was utterly pointless. Seemed cramp for space with Salah playing more central. Opened up for him more as the game went on.

Sadio Mane 7

Played the middle man in Salah's grand counter, as he laid on his teammate. Should have had one himself but VAR didn't like the sniff of his armpit - back to the Nivea commercial room for him.

Mohamed Salah 8

If he hasn't already been given the keys to Anfield, someone needs to get down to Timpson. 53 goals in 63 appearances at the stadium now. The bend he got on the finish was outrageous, after a wicked counter attack. Finished off the game with cheeky finish.
