Liverpool player ratings as Harvey Elliott and Alisson good against Athletic Bilbao

Alisson Becker 8

Stood up well when Williams was clear and some decent saves first half as Athletic threatened.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

Had one curled one effort saved early on and noticeably stepped into central areas whenever possible. Good set-piece deliveries.

Joel Matip 6

Prompted cheers when seeing off Williams in one tussle but pace of Athletic striker was a test, not least when nutmegged in the build-up to the equaliser.

Virgil van Dijk 6

Another start as he regains sharpness, although rustiness remains understandably apparent. Twice close with headers from Alexander-Arnold corners.

Andy Robertson 7

Bombed down the left flank with usual energy but his injury just before half-time will be a major concern so close to the start of the season.

James Milner 6

Knitted play together well from a defensive midfield role but was bypassed on occasion by pace. Steady enough.

Naby Keita 7

Kept things simple in the engine room and his pressing initiating the opener, before becoming more prominent after break.

Harvey Elliott 8

Narrowly wide with one ambitious curling effort first half and then struck the woodwork with another later on. Always busy and doesn’t look out of place.

Mohamed Salah 7

Brought great save from Agirrezabala with one first-half curler and always a threat with his pace and movement.

Diogo Jota 8

Cool finish for the opening goal and had a header cleared off the line. Sharp and alert, appears in the box seat for a start at Norwich.

Sadio Mane 7

Lively again and pass set up the opener for Jota. First touch improved and put himself about.

Owen Beck (for Robertson 46) 6

Created opening for Jota with his first involvement but learning curve defensively.

Rhys Williams (for Van Dijk 72) 6

Slotted in at centre-back with the minimum of fuss.

Ben Woodburn (for Jota 72) 6

More minutes for the busy Welshman.

Jake Cain (for Keita 84)

Instantly involved in the attack.

Tyler Morton (for Elliott 84)

Curled one just over with his first touch.
