Liverpool player ratings as Trent Alexander-Arnold nightmare ended early

Alisson Becker 5

Not always the most convincing with his distribution and fortunate to escape after one bad pass and went for a wander in the second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 4

Gave the ball away on numerous occasions and failed to clear for the opener. Nightmare first half with only marginal improvement after break. Subbed.

Jordan Henderson 7

Solid enough in an unaccustomed position at centre-back and exceptionally vocal. Shame he was let down by so many of his team-mates.

Fabinho 6

Alongside yet another new defensive partner, okay but outpaced by Ings for one opening first half.

Andy Robertson 6

Deliveries not on point and irked the referee first half. Better after break and constant threat on the overlap. Booked.

Gini Wijnaldum 5

Difficult for the Dutchman to find any space in a congested midfield until Southampton were pressed back during second half.

Thiago Alcantara 6

Found himself pressed repeatedly and not always able to find the passes, but began to become an influence after break. Booked.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 5

A couple of encouraging runs but too often they ended up going nowhere. Understandably faded. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 5

Not always on the same wavelength as his team-mates and sent a header over shortly before break. Poor pass when there was opening for Alexander-Arnold later on.

Roberto Firmino 5

Shot wide early on and at least pressed a bit before the break. Drifted out of the game somewhat after that.

Sadio Mane 6

Demonstrated flashes of threat first half, curling over and digging out cross for Salah header. Effort blocked second half and should have had a penalty.

Xherdan Shaqiri (for Oxlade-Chamberlain 57) 6

Couldn’t change the game.

James Milner (for Alexander-Arnold 78)

On long enough to be fouled poorly by Walcott, a tackle which was not penalised.
