Liverpool player ratings as Trent Alexander-Arnold back to best but Minamino struggles

Alisson Becker 7

Stood up well to Dreyer in the opening moments in only first-half contribution. Commanded his area confidently as the Danes started to threaten second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 9

Almost through after one mazy dribble into the area and distribution much, much better than of late. Good one-two with Shaqiri to set up the opener and his pass to Salah forced the penalty for the second. Real quality.

Fabinho 6

Fairly sedate outing until he worryingly pulled up injured. Subbed.

Joe Gomez 8

Won some good headers early on and wasn’t intimidated by the Midtjylland attack. Revelled in the extra responsibility at the back once Fabinho departed.

Andy Robertson 7

His crossing won a couple of corners for Liverpool first half and defensively solid, particularly when Midtjylland ramped up the pressure late on.

Jordan Henderson 7

Pushed with purpose going forward but took up a more defensive position after Fabinho’s exit. Subbed during the break.

James Milner 7

Had one shot blocked for a corner on a rare forward foray. Got through the hard yards first half, then began to influence matters more. Booked.

Xherdan Shaqiri 7

Took a little while to settle in his position but began to show some good attacking flourishes before the break. Excellent pass the key during build-up to the opener.

Diogo Jota 7

A couple of strong runs and a volley wide aside, wasn’t able to influence matters sufficiently before break but, as at weekend, grew into game and notched vital goal.

Takumi Minamino 5

Really struggled to make an impression and became frustrated with himself after some loose touches. Subbed.

Divock Origi 5

Swapped wings on occasion and twice clobbered by strong challenges, but inconsistent in possession and rarely a threat. Subbed.

Rhys Williams (for Fabinho 30) 7

Encouragingly composed stuff from the youngster and made one good interception after break.

Gini Wijnaldum (for Henderson 46) 7

Instantly up to speed with the game and busy in midfield, helping shield the defence and regularly accepting the ball off the defence.

Sadio Mane (for Origi 60) 6

Busy on the left but not able to fully stretch his legs often.

Mohamed Salah (for Minamino 60) 7

Added pace to the attack and fired one effort over before winning and converting the penalty for the second.

Roberto Firmino (for Jota 80)

Just enough time to miss a sitter.
