Liverpool player ratings against Barcelona - Virgil van Dijk loses Lionel Messi battle as only two Reds shine in Champions League

Alisson Becker 7

No chance with Suarez's opener and made a smart stop from Coutinho early on. Sensible distribution. Late saves keep Liverpool in the tie.

Joe Gomez 6

His first start since December, was exposed at times but stuck to his task first half and a willing runner going forward. Started to struggle after an hour, not unsurprisingly.

Joel Matip 8

Some important blocks and interceptions but was caught napping slightly by Suarez for the opener. Made amends with great tackle on the same player second half.

Liverpool fans all notice same thing about TV coverage of Champions League Barcelona match

Virgil van Dijk 6

Dealt with Messi decisively in one passage of play. Not quite his usual composed self up against Suarez, but not alone there. Good interception prevented a Barcelona second, but slow to react for Messi's second.

Andy Robertson 8

Riled the home crowd with one excellent challenge on Messi, and was his usual progressive self down the left. So important at both ends of the pitch.

Fabinho 6

Worked hard first half but no disgrace in being shown up a few times by Messi. His passing was at times a little slack but determination and tackling made up for it. Booked for the free-kick for Messi's second.

James Milner 7

Started on the right but switched to the left after Keita's substitution and far more influential as a consequence. Twice close after the break. Dumped Messi to the ground at one point – revenge for that nutmeg the other year, no doubt.

Liverpool injury latest after Naby Keita blow vs Barcelona

Naby Keita 6

Started brightly but was caught by a strong challenge from Rakitic that eventually led to his substitution.

Mohamed Salah 7

Regularly destroyed Alba and Lenglet with his pace, but the final ball was too often missing. So frustrating. Drew a fine save from Ter Stegen second half and missed a great chance late on.

Gini Wijnaldum 5

Playing ostensibly in the Firmino role, if a little deeper. Some good touches early on but disappeared almost completely before the break. Better in the second half, but not his fault really.

Sadio Mane 7

Effective both when pressing and moving forward. Guilty, however, of a bad miss, even if he was stretching for the ball somewhat. Always a danger with his pace.

Luis Suarez stays true to Liverpool celebration promise in Barcelona clash

Jordan Henderson (for Keita 24) 7

No doubt hurting from being benched, put in a brilliant pass for Mane and full of energy.

Roberto Firmino (for Wijnaldum 79)

Saw an effort cleared off the line.

Divock Origi (for Milner 85)

Too late to make a difference.
