Liverpool plan for pre-season friendlies with USA trip unlikely

Liverpool are unlikely to join the Premier League exodus to the United States this summer as they continue to assess their plans for pre-season.

Manchester United this week confirmed they will head across the pond for the first time in five years as part of a pre-season tour, one of several top-flight clubs set to feature in the US with Chelsea, Newcastle United, Brighton and Leeds United all reportedly poised to follow suit.

Liverpool are still to formalise their pre-season preparations, which will return to regular length this summer having been abbreviated last year due to the late end to one campaign and the early beginning of the next due to the mid-season World Cup.

But the ECHO understands they are increasingly unlikely to include a trip to the US, which the Reds last visited under Jurgen Klopp in 2019 with games in South Bend, New York and Boston, the latter the home of owners Fenway Sports Group.

Liverpool were in Asia last summer when they faced Manchester United in Bangkok before taking on Crystal Palace in Singapore. There were no lucrative tours in either 2020 or 2021 due to travel restrictions imposed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Reds are almost certain to spend a part of the summer in Europe, with reports in Germany earlier this year claiming Liverpool were considering a stint near Donaueschingen where Klopp has previously visited while in charge of Borussia Dortmund. Barcelona and Brentford had training camps there in the last two years.

Having bemoaned the shortened preparations for this term, Klopp - who always views pre-season as a vital part of the campaign - will be hopeful of a more agreeable programme this time around, with the Reds likely to prioritise football over commercial considerations.

Liverpool will finish this season with the final Premier League game on May 28, with national team duty ending on June 20. With no major international tournament this summer, even those players who feature for their countries post-season are expected to have a month off before the Reds step up their preparations for the next top-flight campaign, which will start the weekend of August 12.
