Liverpool plan for Nat Phillips as new contract confirmed

Nat Phillips has become the latest Liverpool player to agree a new long-term deal with club.

Phillips has put pen to paper on an improved contract that will extend his Anfield commitment to 2025.

The centre-back, who arrived in 2016 from Bolton Wanderers, had attracted significant interest during the summer transfer window having enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with the senior team last season, with the Reds asking for around £15million.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez having since recovered from long-term injury and joined by £36m centre-back summer signing Ibrahima Konate, Phillips has yet to feature in a matchday squad this season.

But the 24-year-old has been rewarded for his progress and will now stay and fight for his first-team place, with opportunities likely to arise in September with the Champions League and League Cup campaigns beginning for the Reds.

Phillips, who had one FA Cup appearance for the club to his name before the start of last season, almost departed last October before his proposed move to Championship side Swansea City fell through.

Liverpool's defensive injury crisis saw Phillips then make his Premier League debut a few weeks later against West Ham United, with the defender going on to make 20 appearances in the campaign and help guide the Reds to Champions League qualification.

The decision of Phillips to sign a new deal means the Reds are now poised to give the green light for 20-year-old centre-back Rhys Williams to spend the rest of the season on loan at Swansea.
