Liverpool phonecall made Man City Premier League title win even better for Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany was happy that Manchester City gave Liverpool false hope on the final day of the Premier League season.

The former skipper was in the thick of it as the two rivals battled it out until the final day in a ferocious title battle. Liverpool had been the biggest thorn in City's side in the 2017/18 season - being the first league team to beat them and knocking them out of the Champions League in a tie that involved the attack on the City team bus - and stepped it up last season.

As things stood on the final day, the Blues knew that they would win the league at Brighton if they matched Liverpool's result at home to Wolves. The Seagulls threatened to spoil the party by opening the scoring at the Amex - only for City to roar back to a 4-1 win that saw them clinch back-to-back titles.

While Kompany was disappointed at the time to concede, once he had finished celebrating his latest triumph a call to a friend that had been at Anfield made it even sweeter.

“I had a good friend who was at Liverpool for their game against Wolves that day," he wrote in new book Treble Triumph .

“After we had won and we’d celebrated, I rang him to ask how their crowd had reacted when Brighton took the lead against us. He told me it was like a party inside the ground and that some of their supporters were crying in the stands saying, ‘We’re going to do it’.

“When I heard that, I realised it was worth us having a scare just to spoil their day that little bit.”
