Purple ribbons are being worn by the people of Merseyside in a campaign launched by the Liverpool Echo following the killing of 11-year-old Rhys Jones. The paper has produced 150,000 of the "Liverpool Unites" ribbons as part of a popular demand for 1,000 more police officers for the region, a mandatory 10-year sentence for carrying a gun, more witness protection resources and better controls of firearms.
