Liverpool path to Champions League final emerges after quarter-final and semi-final draw

Liverpool will have to overcome some familiar foes if they are to earn a return to Istanbul in the Champions League final.

The Reds have discovered their route to the showpiece after the draw for the final stages was made at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday morning.

Jurgen Klopp's side face Real Madrid in the last eight in a rematch of the 2018 final in Kiev, which the Spanish giants won 3-1.

The first leg will take place in Spain on April 6/7 with Anfield hosting the return the following midweek.

Liverpool won through to the last eight for the third time in four years by defeating RB Leipzig 4-0 on aggregate.

Real, meanwhile, saw off Atalanta - who finished second in the Reds' group - by following a 1-0 away win with a 3-1 home triumph.

Liverpool have played Real six times previously in European competition, winning the first three - including the 1981 final - but losing the most recent three encounters.

Should Liverpool progress, they will then take on either Porto or Chelsea in the semi-final.

The Reds beat Porto on the way to winning the competition in 2019 and have previously faced Chelsea three times in the last four, winning twice in 2005 and 2007 and losing in 2008.

The semi-final first leg takes place on April 27/28 with the return on May 4/5.

The final will be held in the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, where Liverpool famously beat AC Milan to lift trophy in 2005.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTER-FINAL DRAW: Manchester City v Borussia Dortmund, Porto v Chelsea, Bayern Munich v Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid v Liverpool.

SEMI-FINAL DRAW: Bayern Munich/Paris Saint-Germain v Manchester City/Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid/Liverpool v Porto/Chelsea.
