Liverpool paramedic mourning her mum brings BBC Ambulance viewers to tears

BBC Ambulance viewers were in floods of tears after the opening segment of tonight's show.

The first episode of the seventh season focused on a new cast of characters from the North West Ambulance service.

The BBC camera crew followed paramedics during an unprecedentedly difficult time as they cared for patients on Merseyside against the backdrop of the Covid pandemic and Storm Christoph.

Call volumes doubled during this period and control were estimated to be answering a new 999 call every 20 seconds.

The first section of the show centred on Liverpool paramedics Jo and Emily - as they were dispatched to a patient who is not breathing.

The call came from the patient's son who later confirmed his mum had died and no longer required CPR.

And this had a big impact on Jo who had recently lost her own mother.

She said: "I have been to DOAs since I've lost my mum, but I don't think I've been to a female."

Jo's crewmate Emily supported her by stopping the ambulance in a nearby area to give her a hug, before they almost immediately had to go out to another job.

The touching moment struck a chord with viewers on Twitter who were brought to tears by the sobering reminder of what paramedics must go through in their daily jobs.

Lisa added: "I couldn't do this job. They're all amazing!!! Heroes!!!"

Emily said: "Paramedics and call handlers are human as well and do feel the same emotions"

Sophie said: "Emotional wreck watching this already"

Lorraine tweeted: "The emergency services are all human too and there's nothing wrong with showing how much they care and how things affect them."

BBC Ambulance continues next Thursday at 9pm
