Liverpool owner John W Henry targets Premier League title following Champions League triumph

Liverpool owner John W Henry believes the club must prioritise winning the Premier League next season because "the fans want it".

The Reds came desperately close to ending their 27-year wait for a league title, finishing just a point behind eventual winners Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp's side lost just one game all season, finishing on 97 points, and the consensus among pundits and managers was that Liverpool were the best side never to be crowned champions.

Liverpool didn't finish the season empty-handed, beating Tottenham 2-0 in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1.

But Henry thinks the Reds must now target domestic success for the fans' sake.

“To me winning in Europe is bigger than winning in England but I think it’s true the fans want it,” the American tycoon told PA.

“I know we’re going to be focused on winning the Premier League next year."

Henry feels the Reds would benefit if they manage to keep injury-ravaged players such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana fit in their bid for the title.

“We need to get healthy," he added. "We need AOC [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain] back, we need a healthy [Adam] Lallana.

“It’s not up to me, but I would guess we’ll see more of Divock [Origi] next year.

"I think he brings something special, he comes with power and speed and brings in scoring.

“I feel really good about next year.”
