Liverpool overlooked as pundits name Champions League 'favourites' after draw

Pundits Glen Hoddle and Steve McManaman have named their favourites for this season's UEFA Champions League.

The group stage draw was carried out on Thursday evening and the Reds have been drawn in group A with Ajax, Napoli and Rangers. Jurgen Klopp 's side reached the final last season, but will hope to go one step further this time around after they were beaten at the final hurdle by Real Madrid.

However, the Reds are surprisingly not one of the favourites for this year's competition, according to the pundits. Hoddle has named Premier League champions Manchester City as the club most likely to win, following the arrival of striker Erling Haaland this summer.

"There are so many teams that can go all the way," he told BT Sport. "You saw last year with Real Madrid that they went all the way and at times that we thought they were out. It is going to be close, but I do believe Manchester City with (Erling) Haaland now is a different animal in Europe.

"City normally have possession and I think in some games this season they may approach it differently and let other teams have the ball because he is so dangerous on the break. I think they might change their tactics slightly, but out of all the British teams in Europe, City have got the best chance of winning."

McManaman, who made over 360 appearances for Liverpool during his playing days, expects the English sides to do well once again. Although, he's named Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain as a team who can go all the way this term.

He also told BT Sport: "I think all of the English teams have an excellent chance. When you look across the whole of Europe, and you analyse some of the other opposition, have Liverpool, have Manchester City, have Chelsea and have Tottenham improved from last year.

"When you look at PSG they have improved a lot, I think Bayern Munich have improved a lot with their signings, bringing in Sadio Mane and Matthijs De Ligt, they have improved a lot and they were close to getting to the semi-final.

"I think it will be very close and I think PSG could have a really good chance this year. With a new manager, they are going under the radar, they have invested well, they have a better balance and I think you have to look at them as well."
