Liverpool have opened talks with Emre Can over a long-term contract that reflects his impressive development at Anfield.

The 22-year-old, part of Germany’s squad at the European Championship, was a key figure for Jürgen Klopp last season as Liverpool progressed to the Europa League final.

Can is two years into the four-year contract he signed when joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for £9.75m in 2014. The club have offered the former Bayern Munich player extended and improved terms that reward his form and responsibility within Klopp’s team.

He could sign the new deal before the start of next season. Liverpool are hopeful of a quick resolution to negotiations with the player’s representatives.
