Liverpool 'on point' to give Alexis Mac Allister dream shirt number as Reds close to deal

Liverpool look set to hand Alexis Mac Allister his much-desired number 10 shirt should he arrive at Anfield.

The Reds are ready to kick-off what will likely be an expensive summer splurge as they attempt to get themselves back on track following a disappointing campaign. Brighton playmaker Mac Allister is among Jurgen Klopp ’s prime targets.

Reports have suggested that a deal is edging ever closer for the Argentine midfielder and it appears that Liverpool have already decided on the shirt number he will wear once he arrives on Merseyside. According to reports in Mac Allister’s home country, Liverpool could bestow the number 10 shirt on the midfielder.

It is a number that he has worn in the past with his first senior side Argentinos Juniors, whilst he currently occupies the same number at Brighton. The 24-year-old would be the latest in a long line of talented players to have taken on the shirt with Liverpool.

Sadio Mane was the previous occupant before his switch to Bayern Munich last summer, whilst the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Michael Owen have both owned the number previously.

Mac Allister has enjoyed a stunning season for both club and country. His 12 goals in all competitions helped Brighton to a place in the Europa League, whilst he also played a key role as Argentina lifted the World Cup in Qatar.

The midfielder looks to have played his last game for current employers Brighton. He was named in the starting line-up as the Seagulls fell to a 2-1 final day defeat to Aston Villa.

Mac Allister broke down in tears at the final whistle, before he waved goodbye to supporters and then headed down the tunnel. Manager Roberto De Zerbi put his arm around the midfielder and pointed towards him as fans sang his name.

The Italian then admitted Mac Allister could be set to move on sooner rather than later. He said: “I think it can be the last game for Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo. It is right that they can leave, they can play at higher level.”

Mac Allister, 24, has two years left to run on his contract at the AMEX Stadium after initially arriving from Argentinos Juniors back in 2019. He has gone on to make 112 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring 20 goals.

Away from him, Liverpool have been linked with a whole host of other potential targets with Chelsea star Mason Mount being targeted in the summer. He has just a year left on his deal, which Liverpool are aiming to take advantage of.
