Liverpool news: Reds respond with Ajax win as fans impeccably observe minute's silence

Liverpool are facing a challenge to bring the feel-good factor back to Anfield.

The Reds have made a stuttering start to the new season, typified by last Wednesday's horrendous 4-1 defeat to Napoli which Jurgen Klopp labelled a "real horror" and the worst performance of his seven-year tenure. His side faced Ajax on the Tuesday, bidding to belatedly get their Champions League campaign up and running.

Klopp was able to welcome back Thiago Alcantara to his staring XI, as Liverpool's injury crisis is beginning to ease. The Reds won't play against until after the international break, as their Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday has been postponed due to strained police forces following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II aged 96.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from Anfield.

Reds respond to Napoli nightmare

Liverpool's 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Napoli is now well in the rearview mirror. The Reds beat Ajax 2-1 on Tuesday to get their Champions League campaign up and running at the second time of asking, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip cancelling out a sensational strike form Mohammed Kudus.

Jurgen Klopp's side took an early lead through Salah before Kudus's spectacular equaliser gave the Dutch champions hope of pulling off a shock result. Liverpool left it late to secure all three points, but Matip's 89th-minute winner ensured that the Reds got over last Wednesday's humiliation in Naples.

Here are five talking points from the match.

Fans observe minute's silence

Liverpool and Ajax supporters impeccably observed a minute's silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II ahead of the two teams' Champions League clash. The match was the Reds' first since the late Queen died at the age of 96 last Thursday, following the postponement of the weekend's Premier League fixtures.

Liverpool players emerged from the Anfield tunnel wearing black armbands "as a mark of respect" for the late monarch, while flags at Anfield were lowered to half-mast. Reds captain Jordan Henderson, alongside Liverpool Women's skipper Niamh Fahey, also paid tribute by signing a book of condolences on Monday.

Barcelona hero score hat-trick

Liverpool's under-19s continued their perfect start to their latest UEFA Youth League campaign after Oakley Cannonier scored a hat-trick against Ajax. The 18-year-old forward made it four goals from just two appearances in European competition this season, with Lewis Koumas' late goal to round off the scoring to give the Reds a 4-0 victory.

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish and Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek were among the crowd watching the game, but they've likely caught a glimpse of Cannonier before. Back when he was 14 and a ballboy for the Reds, he threw the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold before the defender's iconic corner kick against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final.
