Liverpool news: Reds ready Mac Allister bid as Alexander-Arnold offers frank assessment

Liverpool's season has been underwhelming for the most part, but there is still an outside chance the Reds land Champions League qualification via a top-four finish.

Jurgen Klopp's side will need Manchester United to slip up between now and the end of the campaign, but if the Red Devils do start to falter Liverpool could pinch a place among the European elite from under the noses of their fierce rivals.

Up next for Liverpool is a trip to a Leicester side battling for Premier League survival who will be fighting tooth and nail to secure what would be a vital home win. Klopp will be all too aware of the kind of test that awaits his side and know that anything less than a win will all but end their Champions League hopes.

With that in mind, Mirror Football has analysed some of the main headlines emerging from Anfield on Sunday, May 14.

Liverpool are gearing up to land the signature of World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister with a £70million deal for the Brighton midfielder.

Though Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United have also registered an interest, but it looks like it is Liverpool who will win the race for the talented Argentine.

Klopp believes that landing Mac Allister – bought for just £4m from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019 – is ample compensation for pulling out of the race to sign £130m Jude Bellingham, who now looks on course to sign for Spanish titans Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold explains what Liverpool should take from season

Trent Alexander-Arnold has discussed Liverpool's difficult season (Sky Sports)

Trent Alexander-Arnold has shed light on what he feels he can take from what has been a difficult campaign for the club as a collective.

"I probably have the same approach personally as I do for the team’s performances this season,” he added. "I look at it the same way – you don’t go from being a world-class team or a world-class player last season to then losing that ability and talent and not having that within you.

"So I know as a team, and personally, what I can achieve and the potential I’ve got. A bad season or a bad run of results or bad performances won’t knock that belief I’ve got within.

"Potentially it is hopefully a season of learning and understanding and bonding because the tough times are when you really come together, when you learn about each other and when you really fight for each other on and off the pitch."

Roy Hodgson has confessed that Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher once told him exactly what he was doing wrong at Anfield.

Speaking on The Overlap, the current Crystal Palace said: “I think probably the most pertinent thing, and I wasn’t really aware of it at the time, but Jamie Carragher said: ‘You know what your big mistake was?’ I said: ‘No, go on. Tell me,’ ‘We’ve been coached,’ he said.

"‘We’ve had [Rafael] Benitez for two and a half years and it’s been pretty rigid – the coaching, the messages.’

"Jamie [Carragher] liked that. It wasn’t a criticism in any way, but he said: ‘You’d come in and you’d done the same thing.’"
